Being of Scottish ancestry myself, this broke my heart. I understand it's just a movie, but the message it sends is not the correct one. You will only be as low or as great as you perceive yourself to be. Scotland forever.
I wrote a fairly extensive personal analysis of this scene but then lost it. I'll just sum it up and say this film is very close to my heart for all the different kinds of philosophical questions it raises and I could very closely relate to it during the time in my life when I saw it. Love it.
often point to this flick, along with Saving Private Ryan, American History X, and Full Metal Jacket as some of the most (potentially) really disturbing movies, that you should see anyway, because it's so not gratuitous, and really needs to be that ugly to do a serious matter justice.
What is a cult? The definition is difficult and elusive. It's nigh impossible to define just what is a cult without encompassing all organized religion. Many of us may in fact subscribe to that particular definition, but for the purposes of this Sift Channel we'll loosely use the following: "a quasi-religious group, often living in a colony, with a charismatic leader who indoctrinates members with unorthodox or extremist views, practices or beliefs"- Webster's New World College Dictionary.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult for more information.
I love that movie.
